Sarge has been released!
In a very unspectacular way, Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, codename
Sarge, has been released. Finally. Strange… things doesn’t
feel any different now — kind of like when you have an “important”
birthday and doesn’t really feel different.
I’ve been with Debian since February 2001 — wow! Has it really been that long? — where I installed the (at the time) unstable Woody. I’ve been running Woody ever since, following along with the updates in unstable and, for the last year or so, in testing.
Now for the first time I have a system based on a stable Debian release… it will be interesting to see how it works out. It might be nice to finally see the stream of updates dry out — with unstable and testing you get lots of updates almost every day, but with stable the only updates will be security updates.
Or maybe not: I have never really felt that my computer was “unstable” or in a “testing” state even though I’ve been running those two branches of Debian. And lately I’ve installed a multi-tty Emacs (which installed fine on Sarge) but what if I want something new and fancy in six months time? I can install that on my Sarge system now, but maybe I’ll be left behind…
There’s the Debian Backports project which seems to aim at people like me who want a bit of both worlds: stability and recent programs. Maybe I can use that when the time comes? I don’t know yet, but I’ll keep you guys updated on my experiences!
